BENEFITS: Develop reading habits, strengthen your connection with your baby
MATERIALS: Fabric or sturdy books
STEPS:
-
Find a baby-friendly book – one that is sturdy and dependable. Babies are likely to use books in ways that we don’t, like mouthing them, dropping or banging them.
-
Hold your toddler in your lap while reading the stories to them. Point at and describe the pictures in the book to your child. Allow them to stop you or play with the book.
-
It’s natural that they may not be able to sit still for the whole book. Don’t worry about it. Just shift to a new activity when they are ready.
-
If possible, choose books of different topics – dinosaurs, trains, cartoon characters, but also feelings, friends, families.
-
Choose books in both the language you speak at home and English if your family is bilingual. And read with plenty of emotion!
