Families First believes that parents are the center of our work and that they can be critical levers for systems change. When parents are actively engaged, it leads to better outcomes for children, families, and communities.
To build on this internal culture of centering parents’ voices to inform our work, we launched a Parent Representative Committee (PRC) to seek parents’ input on key programmatic and organizational decisions at Families First. This parent-led committee was co-developed by a Tiffany Benson, a staff member who is also a former program participant, and Nayanny Bello, a current Leadership Fellow in the Ripple Program.
A Parent Representative Committee is instrumental in creating a positive, collaborative, and supportive environment. It ensures that the voices of parents are heard and that the best interests of families are at the forefront of decision-making within the community.
With their expertise in how parents want to be engaged, lived experiences, and unique skills and knowledge, the PRC will:
- Work together with other parents to help Families First make decisions that benefit families.
- Bridge the gap between parents and Families First across the state.
- Facilitate open and effective communication, ensuring that parents’ concerns, suggestions, and questions are heard and addressed.
- Advocate for interests.
- Push for improved resources, support services, and policies that benefit families.
- Influence decisions that impact Families First programming and other areas of the organization, ensuring it aligns with the needs and values of the community.
- Guide parents to feel more empowered and connected.
